When I am afraid, I will trust in You.
I am afraid a lot. If I have a full schedule for the day, I
am afraid I will not make it to everything in time. If I have a nine-hour day
at work ahead of me, I am afraid I will get sick or somehow not be able to make
it until the end of my shift. If someone suddenly shows up at my door, I am
afraid it is bad news, or someone who is trying to scam me, or someone who
means me harm, or someone who wants me to do something for them that I cannot
or do not want to do. If my daughter is late in coming home, I am afraid she
has had an accident or a mishap. If I don’t hear from my adult children for
weeks, I am afraid something bad has happened in their life or that somehow, I
have made them angry or hurt them. If a friend doesn’t text me back, I am
afraid I approached them at an inappropriate time. If I am called to the
office, I am afraid I have done something wrong.
But with God, I don’t have to be afraid. I can talk to Him
and tell Him I am afraid and ask Him for His peace.
Then, sometimes, a praise song pops in my head or a Bible passage. I say it out loud, wherever I am.
I focus on Jesus and the fear subsides.
Whenever I feel afraid
I hold my head erect
And whistle a happy tune
So no one will suspect
I’m afraid
(Whistle a Happy Tune, Rogers & Hammerstein)
