Secret

SECRET – 31 Days of Writing about Writing

Secrets

I keep secrets others have told me. I have kept some so long I don’t remember them anymore. When I was a reporter, I took notes with a line drawn down the middle of my paper. One side was for the story, the other was off the record. This helped me remember what I could put into my story and what I could not. I honored this. It sounds more nefarious than it was. Most of the off the record things were an elected official’s opinion or a personal insight. Sometimes it was a prediction. Sometimes it was information about someone else that I could check up later. Sometimes it was personal issues that had nothing to do with the story I was writing so I didn’t even write it down.

I have a secret stash of notebooks filled with words I don’t want anyone to see. These words were carved on the gray stone of my pain, anger, frustration, and sin. I have kept these notebooks to go back to and review a dark time in my life and praise God for bringing me out of it. At the time I read it, I may save some words for remembrance and destroy the notebook. I have done this, and it is cleansing, rewarding, insightful.

I keep a special place, a secret space, in my heart where I meet God. I keep it well lit and clean. I am there several times a day.

I write about secret things that happen between me and God. I have a special notebook where I write my God secrets. Most of them I do not share with others. This notebook is a special place I can go when I feel alone or afraid or if I’m having a difficult time trusting God. This secret notebook reminds me of the special times God showed up in a creative and amazing way.

Go to the secret place to be with God. I have an old oak tree I go to pray sometimes. This tree was at least 20 years old when we moved so it was allowed to grow. That makes it is special to me. The space there is private and quiet.

“But you, when you pray; go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who I in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.” – Matthew 6:6 NASB

Locked notebooks

When you are a writer, it has to be okay to write secrets. If we don’t, the secrets will be a wall to the beautiful words further on.

Crave

I crave Writing by myself in the truck parked in the lot at the local park with the windows open listening to the breeze and the bird song.

I crave writing better, clearer, with more ease. I crave knowing more about what I have to do to get people to understand what I’m trying to say. I crave writing with more emotion, the kind that the reader can feel, not just me.

I crave writing at the local coffee shop and someone coming up to me and asking what I’m working on while buying my latest book as they ask me to sign it.

I crave a writing retreat by myself in some room or cabin someplace with at least three projects to work on.

I crave feeling relief from the ugly drive inside me that needs to get things done, the perfectionist, the workaholic, the overachiever.

I crave a group of friends that understand me and don’t mind if I disappear for months and forgive me for disappearing when I return.

I crave time with people who have died.

I crave that special spark that happens when a project I’ve written hits someone in a special way and blesses them.

I crave morning coffee, that special moment when the first few sips taste exquisite and my body and brain wake up and the possibilities of the day lay before me.

I crave relaxing after a day of hard work with my feet up and a crochet project in my hands watching a fun show on television with my husband and talking about the day.

I crave a burger and fries.

I crave fried chicken, crispy, with all the extras.

I crave more time in God’s Word, the pure milk of the word.

I crave a closer spiritual connection with my fellow believers.

I crave a tighter walk with God.
